Format support
WAV is provided by FiveMinFree's local recorder. Depending on your browser, you may also see WebM/Opus, Ogg/Opus, MP4/AAC, MP3 or FLAC. Unsupported formats are simply not offered.
Useful for
Record spoken notes, pronunciation practice, meetings you have permission to record, interview clips, instrument ideas, podcast snippets or a quick microphone test.
WAV is the safest editing and compatibility choice, but files are large because the audio is uncompressed. Opus is excellent for efficient speech and general audio when your browser provides it. AAC/M4A is common on phones and Apple devices. Some browsers can create MP3 or FLAC directly; when they cannot, record WAV or another available format and use our Audio Converter afterward.
Your browser controls microphone permission, and the microphone is released when you stop or discard the recording. FiveMinFree does not provide hidden or background recording. If you are recording other people, make sure you have the permission required where you live.
