FiveMinFree will show sensible output choices for your source file.

Output format JPEG is ideal for photographs and broad compatibility, but it does not support transparency. Quality 88 88 gives a good balance of image quality and file size. Transparency background #ffffff · white Used when the destination format cannot preserve transparency.

Remove image metadata — recommended Strips compatible EXIF metadata such as camera details, timestamps and GPS location. Uncheck this if you need the converter to attempt to retain compatible metadata.

PSD, XCF, OpenEXR, HDR, JPEG 2000, DDS and TGA conversion

Designers, photographers, 3D artists and game developers often inherit files that are awkward to open on another machine. The converter can flatten or rasterize many of those formats into a practical destination without pretending to replace the original authoring application.

PSD / PSB

Photoshop documents can be flattened to common image formats. FiveMinFree does not claim to preserve an editable Photoshop layer structure.

XCF

GIMP project files can be flattened for sharing or use in software that cannot open XCF.

OpenEXR / HDR

Useful for VFX, 3D and high-dynamic-range pipelines. Converting to ordinary display formats can reduce precision and dynamic range.

Image conversion notes for serious workflows

Conversion does not recreate lost detail

Changing a JPEG to PNG or TIFF does not restore detail that was already removed by JPEG compression. It changes the file format, not the history of the pixels.

RAW conversion is not RAW development

A dedicated RAW editor gives you much more control over demosaicing, white balance, lens corrections, highlight recovery, noise reduction and camera profiles. FiveMinFree is intended for quick, practical format conversion.

Colour profiles and metadata vary by format

Metadata removal is enabled by default. If you disable it, server conversion will attempt to retain compatible metadata and profiles, but not every field or profile can survive every format change. Browser-local conversions create a fresh rendered file.

Animated and multi-page files

This tool converts the first frame or page only from animated GIF/APNG files, multi-page TIFF/DCX files and other multi-image sources. Animation-preserving conversion belongs in a separate tool.

Can I convert Canon CR3, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, Fuji RAF or DNG files?

Yes, when the server's ImageMagick RAW delegate reports support for that camera format. FiveMinFree detects the formats available on the server and only accepts the supported set.

Can I convert PSD or XCF files without Photoshop or GIMP?

Yes for a flattened image result. This converter is useful for getting a viewable JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF or similar file, but it is not an editor and does not promise to preserve the original document's editable layers.

Are my photos uploaded to FiveMinFree?

Common browser-compatible conversions can remain entirely on your device. Formats that need server processing are uploaded temporarily; the original is removed after processing and the temporary result expires automatically.

Which output should I choose for professional photography?

JPEG is practical for delivery and proofs, TIFF is useful for lossless interchange, and WebP or AVIF are efficient for web publishing. If you need maximum RAW-editing flexibility, keep your original RAW file as the master.
