Common workflows
Convert documents without installing another office app
FiveMinFree is useful when you receive a document in the wrong format, need a quick PDF for sharing, or want to move between Microsoft-compatible and open document formats.
Move older Word 97–2003 documents into the newer DOCX format while retaining as much editable structure as possible.
Useful for LibreOffice and Linux users who need to exchange documents with people using other office software.
Convert older rich-text files to PDF, DOCX or ODT when you need a more practical modern format.
Extract the readable text into a simple text file when formatting, images and page layout are not needed.
Create a reflowable ebook file from a text-focused document. Complex page designs may need cleanup afterward.
Formatting, fonts and compatibility
Document conversion is not always pixel-for-pixel identical. If the source uses a font that is not installed on the FiveMinFree server, the converter may substitute another font. Complex tables, tracked changes, embedded objects, unusual fields and application-specific layout features can also move slightly between formats.
For the most dependable sharing result, convert to PDF and check the finished file. If you need to keep editing, DOCX or ODT are usually better choices. RTF and legacy DOC are included for compatibility with older workflows.
FiveMinFree intentionally does not accept macro-enabled DOCM/DOTM files in this module. PDF is currently an output format rather than an input format; dedicated PDF tools can be added separately so they can have their own safety and page-processing limits.
Private by design, but server processed
Some document conversions require server-side processing, so the selected file is uploaded temporarily. It is stored under a random internal name, used for this conversion, then the original is deleted. The result remains available only for a short download window before automatic cleanup.
